You may have heard about a certain retro British dessert making its rounds on social media. Folks with fond memories of the ’80s and ’90s, the Arctic Roll is back in Singapore. And you can find it at all Fairprice supermarkets islandwide.

First invented by Dr. Ernest Velden in the 1950s, Arctic Roll is an ice cream cake made of vanilla ice cream, wrapped in a thin layer of sponge cake with raspberry-flavoured sauce. It’s practically a swiss roll with an ice cream filling reminiscent of raspberry ripple, the kind you can buy from an ice-cream uncle.

Old school cool

As described by chef and author Nigel Slater, Arctic Roll is a “sponge-covered tube of vanilla ice-cream, its (unique selling point) being the wrapping of wet sponge and ring of red jam so thin it could have been drawn on with an architect’s pen”.

First spotted by eagle-eyed shoppers and shared on public Facebook group, Can Eat! Hawker Food, news about the elusive Arctic Roll quickly gained traction amongst Singaporeans eager to get a taste of this blast from the past. Who can blame them? It was taken off the shelves in 1997 — that’s more than 20 years ago.

A box of Arctic Roll (S$6.50) is currently retailing at a promotional price of S$5.45 at selected Fairprice outlets. It’s reportedly out of stock at many locations, so count yourself very lucky if you manage to snag a box (or six).
