Visit Old Airport Road Food Centre frequently? Chances are you’ve come across Eminami Halal Vietnam, a fairly popular hawker stall known for affordable Vietnamese fare that’s both authentic and halal-certified.
Eminami is opened by a Vietnamese-born Muslim lady, Emina Abdullah, who moved to Singapore eight years ago. The lack of proper halal Vietnamese cuisine available led to her setting up her very own F&B venture showcasing authentic Vietnamese food and drinks — without tweaking her recipes to suit our local palates.
And now, she’s even opened up a second outlet — a bistro along Kandahar Street in Bugis.
The menu is a lot more extensive as compared to that of its Old Airport Road counterpart, featuring an array of stews, pho, banh mi, salads, and so much more.
Start off with Deep Fried Spring Rolls (chả giò, S$10.90), Papaya Salad (S$13.90), or Vietnamese Crepe (bánh xèo, S$15.90), a must-order for me.
Then move on to the banh mi — the Bánh Mì Chicken Meatball (S$13.90) comprises freshly-made Vietnamese baguette stuffed with chicken meatloaf balls, Chef’s French pâté (a chicken and onion-egg batter spread), pickles, herbs, vegetables, and a secret sauce.
Those who prefer to soak in the comfort of a Classic Phở Bò (from S$14.90) will adore the oh-so-reliable combination of beef cuts, toasted spices, meatballs, rice noodles, and fresh herbs in a beef broth.
Alternatively, the Classic Bún bò Huế (S$16.90), prepared using bone stock, lemongrass and chilli, is perfect for those who enjoy spicy and tangy flavours.
If you’ve yet to try cơm tấm, otherwise known as “broken rice”, the Cơm Tấm Sài Gòn (S$16.90), a sweet and savoury combo of grilled chicken with pickles, egg chiffon, and vegetables, doused in scallion sauce, gives a whole new meaning to the term “chicken and rice”.
End on a high with the creamy foam-topped Hanoi Egg Coffee (S$6.90) or the Avocado Meets Coffee (from S$6.90), a “Singaporean favourite” of Vietnamese avocado blended with pressed coffee.
