Let’s put the phrase “out with the old, in with the new” on hold. Sometimes, all we need is a taste of nostalgia that transports us back to our younger days. Established in 1993, Dino Cake House & Cafe is a long-running bakery and cafe along Upper Thomson that oozes old school cool.

The cafe is located just outside Exit 4 of the Upper Thomson Station TE8 (thank you, Thomson-East Coast Line!), alongside the seemingly neverending stretch of (newer) cafes and eateries the area is known for.

In the era of all things IG-worthy, the simple, no-frills interior provides a much-needed change of pace. Why worry about finding the right angles or ordering the most picture-perfect plate of food? There’s no need for that here.

This charming display houses some of the most pocket-friendly cakes and pastries you can find in Singapore.

Go for the Durian Well (S$3.80), Fresh Cream Puff (S$2.20), or the ridiculously affordable Sugar Roll (S$1). Seriously, where can you find S$1 cakes nowadays?

Choose from an array of teatime treats that won’t break the bank, like the Eclair ($2.50), Coffee Peanut Ring (S$2.50), and Blackforest Slice (S$3). You can even order Whole Cakes (from S$20) that have graced many birthday parties (and physical photo albums) over the years.

Hearty savoury fare

Dino Cake House & Cafe’s most popular dish is arguably the Mee Siam (S$4.80), that’s described as “lip-smacking” and “the favourite of many”. Look at the photos and reviews online — this really is the dish to order.

Other lunch picks include the Fried Bee Hoon Sambal (S$6.80), Chicken Cutlet Rice (S$8.90), and Dino Laksa (S$6) which is cooked in a claypot. You can even find comforting Italian-inspired pasta dishes like Lasagne (S$12.90) and Carbonara (S$10.50) on the menu.

Both the sweet and savoury offerings here have delighted both young and old for close to three decades. Never change, dear Dino.
