Believe it or not, ramen that’s both good quality and wallet-friendly is still a thing in Singapore. However, it can be challenging to find restaurants that serve slurp-worthy bowls of ramen under S$10 (in this economy?!), and those that exist deserve all the support they can get.

Here’s a hidden gem in the west that ticks all the right boxes En Ramen in Clementi.

En Ramen used to operate out of a hawker stall at Toh Guan Food & Drinks Centre in Jurong East (with S$4.50 ramen!) before shifting to an air-conditioned shop space along Sunset Way in late 2022.

Even so, the restaurant sees its fair share of customers (and longtime regulars) eager to satisfy their cravings for ramen, rice bowls, and fried gyoza.

Prices for ramen start at S$7.50; you won’t go wrong with the En Original Ramen (S$7.50), which is your standard bowl of rich tonkotsu ramen, topped with tender, slow-braised chashu slices, black fungus, spring onion, and perfectly gooey homemade ajitama egg.

All that for S$7.50? Wow.

If spicy ramen is your jam (it is mine), the En Signature Ramen (S$8.50) takes it up a notch with the addition of both chashu slices and stir-fried minced pork with a secret chilli paste.

Alternatively, you can even go for the priciest ramen option on the menu, the Salmon Bonito Ramen (S$9.50), featuring salmon slices and a light yet still flavour-packed bonito fish broth flavoured with Japanese soy.

If you’re not in the mood for ramen, choose from a selection of rice bowls and curry rice, with options like the Chicken Karaage Curry Rice (S$8.50), Gyu Don (S$8.90), and even a Japanese Mapo Tofu Don (S$8) — the latter still packs a punch, despite not containing any Sichuan peppercorns (this is Japanese-style, not Chinese-style mapo tofu, after all)

And of course, you’re free to bulk up your meal with sides like salmon sashimi, Chicken Karaage (from S$7.50), Kaki Fry, Breaded Oyster (from S$3.90), and Pumpkin Croquette (S$6).
