G Izakaya in Golden Mile Tower now serves affordable izakaya-style dishes from S$7.80 like massive unagi don, yuzu pork belly skewers & more

by Christabel Tan

Contrary to its name, G Izakaya in Golden Mile Tower is best known for affordable Japanese omakase, not the kind of food you’d find in an izakaya.

That’s no longer the case, given that the cosy restaurant has finally reopened its izakaya section, with a revamped menu featuring affordable izakaya classics from S$7.80 and a neat selection of sake.

The restaurant is divided into two sections: a space with counter seating for omakase diners, and a more spacious dine-in area with immersive LED screens that may just transport you to a different world (especially for those who won’t be visiting Japan anytime soon).

Start with what G Izakaya excels in — the 3 Kind Sashimi (S$28.80) — plump, thick, fresh slices of seasonal sashimi.

Move on to the Uni Sakura (S$15), comprising tamago, tobiko, shredded daikon, and creamy uni sandwiched in between crisp wafer shells. It’s a light appetiser with an indulgent touch that’ll make fans of Japanese sea urchin swoon in delight.

However, “Uni Sakura” is merely a placeholder name; the diner who can come up with the most creative name for this dish will receive a S$250 voucher, so it might be time to start brainstorming if you’re in need of some extra cash.

Do check with the restaurant directly for more details on the giveaway.

It’s hard to go wrong with maki sushi rolls (typically loaded with toppings) but what about those of the deep-fried variety? The Fried Handroll (S$11.90), is composed of fairly simple ingredients — salmon, tamago, cucumber, tobiko, and a drizzle of mayo — but with a fun-to-eat tempura-battered nori exterior.

And of course, you’ve got to order kushiyaki, a staple at practically all authentic Japanese izakayas.

Although the Tsukune (S$6), or chicken meatballs, were decent, I particularly enjoyed the Butabara Yuzu (S$7.80), deceptively tender grilled pork belly skewers served with a yuzu sauce which had the consistency of miso paste.

Those looking for a filling yet value-for-money lunch option can give the Tonkatsu Don (S$7.90) a try — it’s a massive portion of fried pork cutlet, tempura bits, and lettuce on rice.

Alternatively, the Unagi Don (S$12.90) consists of premium-quality eel, seaweed, and pickles on an equally generous portion of rice.

You can also elevate your donburi experience by making it a full(er) meal with an Onsen Egg (S$1), Miso Soup (S$1), or Chawanmushi (S$1.50).

We highly recommend washing down these dishes with sake — you need something to balance out those bold and savoury flavours, anyway.
