If you’ve been craving for a day out, visit Home, Truly: Growing Up With Singapore, 1950s to the Present, an HDB-inspired exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore

Held at the Exhibition Gallery at the basement level of the National Museum, the HDB-inspired exhibition was made in collaboration with The Straits Times as part of the newspaper’s 175th anniversary.

The space shows little snips of Singapore’s past and present, shaping the identity and collective memory of the nation through photographs and artefacts.

Soft fairy lights are peppered at all corners of the exhibition, creating a warm ambience that invites Singaporeans to take a deeper look into the country’s past.

Besides photographs and artefacts, there are even audio-visual footage, sounds, scents, and special digital features — displays of common everyday experiences and memories such as hawker food, school, and recreation places.

The HDB-inspired exhibition also features the concept space; The Open Doors. Created to look like a void deck, it is a familiar sight to all Singaporeans but with a small twist.

The walls are plastered in shades of pink and white, with birdcages hanging from the ceiling. Each wall panel displays the influence of the immigrant and multicultural past on Singapore and the views of what home means to different people.

Dive deeper into the section and you’ll find a seating area, aesthetically placed within a geometric wall cut-out. The photogenic corner provides a nice frame for pictures and soft shadows to add to the vibes.

The HDB-inspired exhibition is a place for us to reminiscence of old times and soak in nostalgic memories — just in time for National Day.

Home, Truly: Growing Up With Singapore, 1950s to the Present runs from now till 3 October, and admission is free for all Singaporeans and PRs.
