Ending the day with dessert always gets a “yes” from me. Instead of the usual gelato and waffles, bubble tea, and plated desserts, why not try something a little more old-school for a change? If you’ve had a very long day, you should seek sweet respite in the form of traditional local homemade desserts and snacks at Hup Ka Foon in Chinatown.

Opened by the team behind Ren Ren Desserts in Siglap Centre, Hup Ka Foon is a cosy and humble eatery located just a stone’s throw from the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.

According to reviews, the signature Cendol (S$3.20) is a must-order. The killer combination of cendol jelly, red beans, and shaved iced drenched in coconut milk, tied together by an aromatic gula melaka syrup, will cool you down in no time at all.

You can also combat the heat with other refreshing desserts including the Fairy Grass Jelly with Longan (S$3.80), Mango Sago Pomelo, and tangy Mango Pudding (S$2.90).

However, one can’t deny the allure of hot desserts. Go for the Tang Yuen (S$2.80), Steamed Egg with Ginger (S$3.20), Longan with White Fungus (S$3.80), or my favourite thing to eat on a rainy day, Sesame Paste (S$3.20). It’s comfort in a bowl!

Don’t miss out on savoury snacks like the Yam Cake (S$3.50), Chee Cheong Fun (S$2.80), and Bowl Zhang (S$3.80). Ask for extra sambal if you like — it’s packed with both spice and flavour.

It’s hard to find desserts under S$5 nowadays, and we should definitely support more of these local establishments. Don’t mind me — I’ll be cosying up to a bowl of black sesame paste this evening.
