Kawan Bowl is a Muslim-friendly stall by DanLao serving scrambled egg rice bowls topped with ayam berempah, beef rendang, sambal prawn & more

by Christabel Tan

You’ve probably heard of Danlao, the chain of stalls best known for their Hong Kong-style scrambled egg rice bowls, by now.

At the time of writing, they have eight outlets (and counting), so it comes as no surprise to anyone that they’ve opened an “egg-citingly inclusive” Muslim-friendly concept in none other than Choa Chu Kang.

Tucked away at the Kopitiam Corner in Sunshine Place, Kawan Bowl offers an exciting array of rice bowls with Malay and Indonesian-inspired flavours.

You won’t go wrong with the Chicken Luncheon Meat (S$5.90), a nod to arguably the most popular dish offered at Danlao, or the signature Ayam Berempah (S$7.90), which sees a whole spiced chicken leg on a bed of warm rice.

Other options include the likes of Banana Leaf Otah (S$6.90), Satay Goreng Chicken (S$6.90), and even Beef Rendang (S$8.90), the priciest option on the menu.

Those with a penchant for spicy food can go for the Sambal Prawn (S$7.90) and Taliwang Chicken Cutlet (S$7.90) — we hear the Taliwang Sauce, which is available as an add-on for S$1, packs a really fiery punch (you have been warned).

Speaking of add-ons, feel free to bulk up your bowl with extra meats, sauces, or even more rice!

Interestingly enough, you get to choose how you like your eggs; not just in the form of the creamy Silken Egg, but also Telur Dadar (fully-cooked omelette) and deep-fried Crispy Egg. So yes, there is indeed something for everyone.

Do note that the stall is still in the process of undergoing halal certification, but have a “no pork, no lard” policy.

Will you be heading down to Kawan Bowl for an affordably price bowl of scrambled (or fried) egg rice?
