Bakeries, bakeries, bakeries. We’re a nation of bread lovers, and we’re not afraid to admit it. In fact, our obsession with seeking out the best cakes, breads, and pastries go beyond borders.

If you’re willing to travel just for the good stuff, Kenjo Bakery is a cafe and bakery located 30 minutes from the JB checkpoint, where you’ll find an extensive variety of Taiwanese and Japanese-inspired bakes.

Firstly, you’ll probably see customers making a beeline for their signature Fleur de Sel Butter Rolls (RM6.70, S$1.92) made using French butter and salt.

The same goes for the Red Bean Butter Baguette (RM7.90, S$2.26), loaded with Taiwanese red bean paste and a thick slab of salted French butter.

If you can’t be bothered to fork out S$15 for a cafe bagelwich, why not try making your own at home, with bagels like Pesto Bacon (RM7.90, S$2.26), Triple Cheese (RM7.90, S$2.26), and Poppy Seeds (RM6.90, S$1.98) to play around with?

Regardless, you’ll definitely find yourself feeling spoilt for choice, given the variety of options ranging from savoury Crispy Sausage Baguette (RM6.50, S$1.86) and Wild Mushroom Truffle Foccacia (RM9.90, S$2.84) to sweet(er) treats in the form of Taiwanese Peanut Polo Bun (RM6.70, S$1.92) and Condensed Milk Soft Bun (RM3.50, S$1).

They even sell the crispy Honey Sugar Toast (RM3.50, S$1) I’ve been seeing all over social media.

You can even buy back entire loaves of bread swirled with fillings like Red Bean (RM16.90, S$4.85), Sweet Potato (RM13.90, S$3.99), and Yam & Pork Floss (RM16.90, S$4.85). Breakfast for the week, sorted.

But that’s not all, as you can also find Swiss Rolls (from RM6/S$1.72 for a slice) in flavours like Rose Velvet, Yuzu, Pandan Gula Melaka, and Yam.

Those are joined by the likes of Basque Cheesecake (RM12, S$3.44), Matcha Chocolate Cake (RM17, S$4.88), and Lychee Rose Cake.

I can anticipate hordes of taro fans heading straight for the Real Yam Cake (RM15, S$4.30), which sees pastel-hued taro cream sandwiched in between layers of light, airy taro sponge.

If you’d like to sit and chill for a bit, we recommend pairing your goodies of choice with the Signature Aussie-Style Iced Coffee (RM18, S$5.16). Otherwise, non-caffeine options like Matcha Latte by Niko Neko (from RM14, S$4.01) and Lemonade Mint Soda (RM14, S$4.01) should more than suffice.

Will you be making a pit stop at Kenjo Bakery on your next weekend trip across the causeway?
