Pancakes and Friends is a hidden spot in town for fluffy Japanese souffle pancakes, S$6 bagelwiches & Vietnamese coffee

by Christabel Tan

Aside from being a treasure trove of beauty salons, tattoo parlours, and old-school shops selling the most random of knick-knacks, Far East Plaza has several hidden cafes up its sleeve.

One such example is Pancakes and Friends, a tiny cafe on the first floor flipping up Japanese souffle pancakes that can easily rival that of more well-known establishments. Simply look for the signage that reads “PANCAKES BAGEL & COFFEE”!

Classic flavours include the likes of Hokkaido Milk (S$12), Strawberry Kisses (S$12), and Choco Banana (S$12), which sees a stack of delightfully fluffy and jiggly pancakes topped with homemade chocolate cream, caramelised banana, and almonds.

I’d totally go for the Tiramisu (S$12), comprising mascarpone cheese cream and homemade coffee sauce, which sounds absolutely divine.

They’ve even got savoury pancake options, such as the Big Breakfast (S$15) with sunny-side up eggs, chicken ham, and cheese, best enjoyed with a healthy glug of maple syrup.

Otherwise, the cafe boasts some of the most affordable bagelwiches (bagel sandwiches) we’ve come across in Singapore, priced from as low as S$6 for a Choco Banana or Strawberry number.

The fillings are kept simple — think Smoked Salmon Cheese (S$8), Egg Mayo (S$7), and Mediterranean Hummus (S$7) — but how can we say no to such hearty yet wallet-friendly bagelwiches?

Drinks-wise, you can find a very extensive selection of specialty coffee and tea, some more unconventional than others, such as Honey Americano (from S$3.50), Mint Latte (S$5), and even different variations of Vietnamese drip coffee.

It’s really hard to find authentic Egg Coffee (from S$5.50), the frothy and creamy kind that tastes like a dessert, at non-Vietnamese restaurants or eateries, so this is a must-order.

Indeed, pancakes and friends sounds like the perfect way to spend a weekend — you know what to do.
