Loaded coney dogs, milkshakes & more at this halal cafe with retro diner vibes

by Christabel Tan

Singaporeans go gaga for retro diner concepts, and with good reason. Comfort food in a casual, laidback setting — what’s not to like? I’ve never stepped foot into a proper American diner, but somehow the concept alone evokes a sense of nostalgia. And you may feel the same in the Muslim-owned Pop’s Cafe in Yio Chu Kang.

Perhaps the name is a nod to Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe from Archie Comics. Late-night hangouts with the gang over ice cream? You bet.

There are mint green feature walls lined with retro knick-knacks and neon lights, but the space is otherwise on the understated end of the spectrum. Take your pick from either indoor or al-fresco seating. You know where to sit for the best IG-worthy shots (hint: natural lighting).

Hot dogs, chicken & waffles, burgers, milkshakes — you name it, they’ve got it.

The hot dogs come loaded with Mentaiko (S$7.90) and Truffle Egg Mayo (S$7.90), with their signature being the Pop’s Coney Dog (S$7.90), a messy affair of homemade chilli beef and nacho cheese. Bring wet wipes.

Craving for a hearty burger? Chow down on Pop’s Cheeseburger (S$9.90) or the Crispy Chicken Burger (S$8.90) that comes in a Nasi Lemak, Black Pepper, or Satay version.

Make it a full meal with a side of Seaweed (S$7.90) or Hot & Spicy (S$7.90) shaker fries, but you might as well go all out with Mentaiko (S$9.90) or Chilli Beef (S$9.90).

No diner experience is complete without Chicken & Waffle (S$9.90) and Milkshakes (S$6.90). Indulge your sweet tooth with flavors like Strawberry Cheesecake, Biscoff, Peppermint Choc Chip, and more.

There is an assortment of desserts to choose from, but the Belgium Waffle with Gelato (S$8.90 for single scoop, S$10.90 for double scoop) is your best bet. Pop’s Cafe even closes at 2am on Fridays and Saturdays — it’s the perfect spot to lepak with friends.
