Popular speciality cafe & toast bar The Glasshouse opens on Neil Road with stunning Australian-inspired brunch spreads, pastries & more

by Christabel Tan

One of the most popular cafes in CHIJMES to this day is The Glasshouse, with many flocking to the IG-worthy space for its glasshouse exterior (often drenched in natural light) and garden-esque decor.

In the spirit of “the more the merrier”, the cafe has opened a second outlet along Neil Road, ideal for those planning a day of cafe-hopping in the bustling Tanjong Pagar area.

Taking over the unit previously occupied by the now-defunct The Lokal, the space is decked out in soothing earthy hues, with marble tables and plush sofas, exuding “rich household/swanky condo” vibes.

Aside from the artisanal coffee and tartines (toast topped with sweet or savoury elements) the cafe is known for, they’ve also branched out to offer a more varied menu of Australian-inspired mains and desserts, some of which are exclusive to the Neil Road outlet.

Although you can find familiar favourites like the Caprese Ricotta Tartine (S$22) and the Avocado Dukkah & Poached Egg Tartine (S$20), there are several other standouts, also of the sandwich variety, worth checking out.

Go for the substantial Roast Beef Sanger (S$28), comprising Australian grass-fed ribeye, red cheddar, sauteed onion, pickles, and wholegrain mustard on rye, or the Fried Chicken Burger (S$25), featuring honey mustard cabbage slaw and a sunny-side up on soft and buttery brioche buns.

Mexican-inspired flavours take centre stage in the Corn Fritters (S$18) topped with charred corn, avocado tomato salsa, and whipped sour cream, while those who love all things dairy can try the unique Glasshouse Mac & Cheese (S$18), prepared using four different types of cheeses, beef fat crumbs, and truffle oil (optional, for an additional S$3).

Alternatively, you can find a selection of pastries, which include the likes of Almond Croissant (S$7), Kouign-amann (S$7), house-made Lemon Loaf (S$8), and even Basque Burnt Cheesecake, which is available in slices (S$8) or as a whole cake (S$65).

Glasshouse Sourdough Waffles (S$14) are also available here — top ’em with a scoop of gelato (S$6) in flavours like Bacio (Chocolate Hazelnut) and Earl Grey.

Pair your mains or pastries with speciality coffee (from S$4 for a Single Espresso), matcha, cold-pressed juice, kombucha, or single-origin hot chocolate.

We highly recommend the Mont Blanc (S$9), cold brew topped with sweet cream and orange zest that practically doubles as a dessert.

Whether you choose to Build Your Own Breakfast, keep it healthy with a salad, or enjoy one of the cafe’s heartier mains, you’re in for an exquisite brunch spread at The Glasshouse along Neil Road!
