Whisking Bakes is Singapore’s first taro cafe selling popular orh nee tarts, mochi swiss roll & more

by Christabel Tan

Lavender may be a haunt full of hidden eats and trendy cafes, but do you know that it is now home to Singapore’s first-ever taro cafe, Whisking Bakes?

Previously operating as a home-based business, followed by a takeaway concept store in Tai Seng, Whisking Bakes is run by ex-cabin crew Chanel, who developed the “World’s First Orh Nee Tart Balls”.

The current pastel-hued space (with dine-in seating and all) is located just a few minutes from Lavender MRT Station, in the same HDB block housing the one-Michelin-starred Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle.

Taro is taken up a notch here, as evident from the selection of bakes to choose from. Think Taro Burnt Cheesecake (S$8), Old School Taro Cake (S$2.50), and of course, the signature Orh Nee Tarts (S$6.80 for five), buttery, melt-in-your-mouth pastry wrapped around creamy and fragrant yam filling. But of course. This is a taro cafe after all.

Non-taro lovers can go for the Bailey’s Burnt Cheesecake (S$7.50) or chunky NYC Levain Cookies (S$5).

The non-alcoholic Taro-Misu (S$6.50) and Taro Mochi Swiss Roll (S$5.50) seem to be the most popular, with the former comprising sponge fingers dipped in taro milk, yam paste, and mascarpone cheese — like a tiramisu without any of the coffee elements.

Do note that some bakes can also be pre-ordered online.

As for drinks, the Taro Latte (S$6), housemade taro paste topped with taro milk, is a standout. Alternatively, quench your thirst with in-house brewed Kombucha (S$5) in flavours like Sour Plum Lime and Strawberry Mint, or grab a Black Sesame Latte (S$6).

Regular coffee drinkers have the usual White (S$5) and Mocha (S$5.50) brewed using beans from Dutch Colony Coffee Co. The best part? You don’t have to top up for dairy-free soy or oat milk.

Be prepared to be whisked away by the yam-my desserts at Whisking Bakes.
