XiaoGege Snowball Mochi sells chewy handmade mochi, durian desserts & more in Chinatown

by Christabel Tan

Be it mochi, tteokbokki, muah chee, or tangyuan, soft and chewy rice cake confections hold a special place in my heart. Why, then, did I take so long to discover XiaoGege Snowball Mochi, a hidden gem in Chinatown?

Situated just a two-minute walk from the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, the takeaway-only store is decked out in a simple white and pastel pink. Although no seating is available, orders can be placed in advance for self pick-up or delivery by contacting +65 9852 0727.

All of the handmade products sold contain less sugar and have no preservatives or colouring.

True to its name, XiaoGege Snowball Mochi’s bestseller is Snowball Mochi (from S$3.50), which comes in an assortment of flavours ranging from Mango (S$3.50) to Purple Sweet Potato (S$3.50). Everyone seems to rave about the signature Black Gold Musang King (S$5.80), a favourite of durian fanatics.

Keep a lookout for their special Salted Egg Floss Cake, an addictive combination of chewy mochi, salted egg yolk crumb filling, custard cream, and pork floss. Sounds like a sweet and savoury dream come true.

I’ve got my eye on the viral Towel Roll cakes, crepe cakes with creamy dreamy layers of whipped cream and fruits. They come in Mango (S$8.80), Coco Oreo (S$8.80), Pandan Coconut (S$8.80), and of course, Black Gold Musang King (S$16.80).

There’s more to XiaoGege than just mochi. The menu boasts an impressive repertoire of Cake Boxes (from S$7.80), Nougat (S$7 for 180g), Milk Dates (S$10 for 180g), Burnt Cheesecake (from S$18.80), Cake Rolls (there’s even a White Rabbit flavour), and Drinks (from S$3.50).

According to their Facebook page, a second outlet in the form of an F&B kiosk was opened today (3 June 2022) at the neighbouring 12 Trengganu Street — the mo(chi), the merrier!

Durian (and dessert) lovers, what are you waiting for? A trip to Chinatown beckons.
