Even though I’ve been an East-sider (who frequently visits Katong) all my life, I only found out about Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe late last year. Embarrassing, much?

Well, better late than never. These are one-of-a-kind bakes you won’t find anywhere else but in Katong V.

Don’t be fooled by its unassuming storefront. Opened by a couple from Macedonia, this cosy cafe serves pastries and cakes using Yugoslavian family recipes that have been handed down for generations.

Grab a pastry using the self-service tongs and order a Balkan Coffee (S$4.40) on the side. There are several all-day set menus for you to choose from, like Pogacha + Coffee (S$6.60) if you want more bang for your buck.

The bakery’s signature is Burek (S$4.90 for 1/8 pie), baked phyllo pastry filled with beef or spinach and feta cheese. Burek is available in 1/4 slices (S$9.80), swirls (S$7.50), and as a whole pie (S$39.90). There’s even a sweet burek swirl with raisins and caramel — perfect with an espresso (or two).

Other must-try bakes include Gevrek (S$2.20), baked sesame bagels, and Pogacha (S$2.10), a traditional round loaf with chocolate or raisin and cinnamon. It’s essentially the Balkan version of a cinnamon roll.

As for the desserts, Vasa’s Cake (S$8.10), a traditional Yugoslavian dark chocolate, orange, and walnut cake, is worth a try. I personally think it tastes like a chocolate fruit cake.

In need of a gift that’s bound to intrigue and impress? Get a box of Bajadera (S$7.90), a Croatian praline, or the widely recognised Baklava (S$10). Kids will take a liking to the Yugoslavia Fresh Yogurt (S$3.40 for a cup, S$6.90 for a 500ml bottle), which pairs especially well with burek.

I may not be travelling to Europe anytime soon (I wish), but this will do for now. Catch me in Katong, folks.
